‘Cat Pun’ is trending on Twitter and Facebook
“Cats are cute, but they can also be dangerous, and a lot of people aren’t being warned,” said Nargis Gopalan, a senior research fellow at the Centre for Policy Research and Policy Studies.
She was referring to cat owners who think the feline’s sharp claws are “soft” and are often used as a weapon by owners.
“A lot of these cat owners are very aware of the risks and it’s very dangerous,” Ms Gopalgan said.
“They are also making it a habit to go to extreme lengths to protect their cats.”
Some of the people that do this have been trained in animal behaviour and are highly sensitive to these types of actions and the results are not positive,” she said.
“And if a cat bites you, you should contact animal control immediately.””
People need to be more aware about the potential for cat-to-cat aggression and should also know what to do if their cat is being attacked,” she explained.
“And if a cat bites you, you should contact animal control immediately.”
Ms Gapalas study of cat-attacks in the city found that, in 2015, nearly 50 per cent of all attacks were by cats, while more than half of those involved cats that had been trained to bite people.
“This means that about a quarter of the attacks were carried out by cats that were not trained to attack humans, or by people that did not know how to safely handle a cat,” Ms Gill said.
“Most of the time it’s the cat owner that has the problem,” she continued.
“There’s a lot that we need to do to educate people about the risks of cat aggression and make sure that they are not using these animals for their own benefit.”
It’s about making sure people know what they are doing, and when and how they are using these cats.
